When a gold valuation is useful
- Before selling gold, to know a fair price
- Before pledging gold, to know what it is worth
- When closing a gold loan and releasing pledged gold
- When dividing family gold
- When you are unsure of a piece’s purity
Why valuation differs from the jeweller’s price tag
The price you paid at a jewellery shop included making charges, wastage and GST. A gold valuation measures only the gold content: net weight × purity × today’s rate. That is why the value of used jewellery is lower than its original price tag, even when gold rates have risen.
