Why old gold keeps its value
Gold does not rust or lose purity with age. A 22K chain bought twenty years ago contains the same gold today, and that gold is worth today’s rate.
When you sell, the making charges and GST you paid at purchase are not returned, because a gold buyer pays for gold content. That is why the price depends on net weight and purity, not on the design or how worn the piece looks.
What can reduce the price
- Stones, beads, enamel and lac or wax filling, which are removed from the weight.
- Lower purity than expected. Some older jewellery is 20K or 18K rather than 22K.
- Solder in the joins of some old pieces, which can be of lower purity.
Testing in front of you shows exactly what your old gold contains, so there are no surprises.
Sell old gold or exchange it?
Jewellery shops often offer to exchange old gold against new jewellery. That usually means paying fresh making charges and 3% GST on the new piece. Selling your old gold gives you money to use however you choose, including buying elsewhere.
